Advice for success#

Having observed students in the past, and having been one myself, here are some of my suggestions for you to do well in this course. They are not very original, but they do work.

  1. Ask questions — If something does not make sense to you, then it probably does not make sense to someone else. Please stop me and ask for further clarification.

  2. Work with other students — Every student has strengths and weaknesses. By working with others, you compliment each other and are able to accomplish more together than you can alone.

  3. Come to class — By coming to class on a regular basis, you will be up to date with course proceedings. I will do my best to post things to D2L, but nothing will be as good as coming to class, paying attention, and taking your own notes.

  4. Put in the time outside of class — You will need to work on the material outside of the classroom. Be sure to plan ahead so that you have plenty of time to get ready for exams/quizzes and work on assignments. If you only work on things during class, you will probably not pass this course.

  5. Go over the practice questions — We will go over many examples in the slides, on the board, and in python. Familiarize yourself with these examples and the logic of what we are doing. Once you have completed a practice question/example, write it out again and come back to it later to see if you can still complete it.

  6. Take care of yourself — Exercise on a regular basis. Eat well. Get enough sleep. Your brain needs it. Studies have repeatedly shown that physical activity and adequate rest have tremendous health benefits, including mental health benefits.
